Kydex: Highly resistant to wear and tear, Kydex is not affected by moisture, sweat, or the elements. It doesn’t absorb water, which makes it less likely to warp, crack, or degrade over time.
Leather: Leather can absorb moisture, leading to potential issues like warping, mold, or cracking. It also requires more maintenance, including conditioning and careful storage to prevent damage.
2. Retention and Custom Fit
Kydex: Provides a superior and more consistent retention, as it can be molded to a specific firearm with high precision. The fit is generally very tight and secure, which ensures the gun stays in place until you draw it.
Leather: Over time, leather may stretch and lose its shape, which can reduce the level of retention and make it less secure. While some leather holsters can provide a good fit initially, they may not maintain that level of retention over time.
3. Speed of Draw
Kydex: The rigidity of Kydex ensures a fast, clean draw. Its smooth interior surface allows for quicker, more fluid holstering and drawing motions. The positive "click" when reholstering also assures you that the gun is securely in place.
Leather: Leather can be slower due to its softness and tendency to mold to the firearm, which may create more resistance when drawing. Some leather holsters may also need to break in to achieve optimal speed, whereas Kydex is ready to go right away.
4. Lightweight
Kydex: Kydex is generally much lighter than leather, which can make it more comfortable, especially for people who wear their holster for long hours. It’s also typically more compact and thinner.
Leather: Leather holsters are heavier and can sometimes be bulkier. This may make them slightly more challenging to conceal, particularly with larger firearms.
5. Consistency and Precision
Kydex: It is molded to a precise shape and will maintain that shape over time, ensuring consistent performance. It also offers a wide range of shapes, styles, and customization options.
Leather: Leather can change shape over time, especially after prolonged use or exposure to moisture. While high-quality leather holsters can last a long time, they may not maintain the same level of consistency in fit and retention as Kydex.
FDE Tan is a go to in our line up of colors. It is a versatile and neutral color that blends well in a variety of environments. As well as matching with our FDE harness system.
OD Green has quickly become one of our favorites. This a great option for outdoorsmen (especially hunters). And pairs very nicely with any FDE handgun you already own.
We thought long and hard about what third color we wanted to offer and are very happy with our choice of Storm Grey. It goes very well with darker clothing and offers a somewhat more discreet look when open carrying a handgun outdoors.
